~Extreme Couponing Response~

Several of you have emailed me about the new "Extreme Couponing" show and want to know my thoughts on it. I did watch mainly out of curiosity. Honestly, it was exactly what I thought it would be and that made me sad. Yes, there were some great parts like when the guy donated all of that cereal. However, the lady being rude at the register, the countless buggies, the hours of shopping, the hours of checking out, the employee help needed made me cringe. There is no reason to ever have that many buggies while couponing.

Couponers who are rude, take more than they should, hold up grocery store lines for HOURS, don't donate when their stock is gigantic, spend 70+ hours per week finding deals, put their children inside dumpsters, spending $70 on buying coupons, I could go on...are the people that give the rest of us a bad rap. It saddens me to think that the world is going to think we are nuts instead of realizing that those people are not Home Economist, but have gone over into hoarders.

I wish they would have highlighted a "normal" couponer to contrast what they were showing. A person that buys normal amounts and a person that also donates a portion of it. You don't have to have a 30 year supply of anything to donate it!

I also wish they would have asked them about expiration dates. There is no way a portion of that food could have been consumed by the expiration date. I hate wasting food, so I really hope they were not throwing it out. I pray that it was being given to someone else to use before expiring.

On the flip side, I did read that TLC encouraged them to buy as much as they could and that Kroger was in on it so there would be enough of what they needed. I also just read that 2 of the ladies did donate what they bought that particular day. Also, there was a great deal of editing to make the couponers sound even more extreme. Just wanted to add that in defense of the couponers.

In the end, it is not my place to judge anyone, this is simply my opinion as asked for by many readers.

~Who I am~

That's who I am....

I'm going to attempt to honestly tell you a little bit about myself. I'm fully aware that the majority of my readers don't know and will probably not ever meet me in person. I'm amazed that some days there are over 3,500 of you reading! Thank you so much for reading and all of the kind emails & comments! I have been blessed.

I'm not laid back. There you have it! There have only been a couple people who have described me as that and I just had to laugh and say "clearly, you don't know me!". Just who I am. I believe you are either born that way or not. I've been attempting to "learn" and it is just not happening. Luckily, I married a very chill (especially under pressure) man who balances me out and keeps me in check. Yes, I said he keeps me in check. He is my best friend and loves me enough that he will nicely let me know when I've gone over to "the other side".

Eww....THE OTHER SIDE...Yep, going there! Some of you are laughing because you know exactly what I'm talking about. Sometimes my engine gets a little too revved up ;)
Some people actually live on "The Other Side". Yikes! No thanks! Many couponers I've seen at the checkout have taken up residence there. Trust me (I can say this because I detour there every once in a while by accident...then I put my car in reverse & burn rubber as fast as I can!)...no one likes people when they are on "THE OTHER SIDE". No deal or situation is worth you looking back and being dissappointed in yourself. So many times I will know that I am in the right at the store and it is the hardest thing to do to not argue with the cashier, but I remember what "those people" look like and nothing is worth that. I don't ever want to make a cashier upset. My goal is to make them smile and bless them for those few moments that I am in their lane.

In the end, I'm just a girl who is madly in love with my husband & daughter and willing to make sacrifices to get to spend as much time possible with them. Becoming a Home Economist and couponing has been the answer for my family. It has made the biggest impact on our budget.

Blessed~

~Getting Excited About the New Year!~

Hope everyone had a blessed Christmas! We sure did. We have had company on and off for a week. We spent Christmas day at home by ourselves. It was peaceful and relaxing. We curled up on the sofa and watched Christmas movies, ate a nice meal and had a Happy Birthday Jesus party! It was a great day!

Previously, I would put my Christmas tree up on October 31st. This year we were so busy and it didn't happen until mid November. Today I looked around and all I saw was clutter. Clutter sort of makes me crazy! So, we took down all of the Christmas decor, cleaned, re-arranged furniture, changed out the wreath and everything. It feels so good to have my house back :) I love Christmas decor, but when the holiday is over, I'm ready to put it up!

I've never put my tree up so late or taken it down so early. Felt like I needed a change. Anyone else feeling that way right now? We have such big hopes and dreams for 2011 and I'm just excited to get it started! We are making changes in our home, our activities, our schedules, our diets, our workouts and our attitudes. 2011 is going to be a year of change. I'm ready to dream new dreams, set new goals and achieve great things. I'm ready to see what God has in store for me!

I hope that you all are setting goals, making changes and getting excited along with me! My hunky hubs and I will be celebrating 10 years of marriage in 2011 also! We are already island dreaming :)
2011 is going to be great!

~Freezer Guidelines=Great Info!~

Found this on the web and thought it was a great guide to freezing foods. Enjoy!
****************************************
Here is a guide to how long you can freeze foods before you sacrifice quality. Keep in mind that quality does deteriorate the longer food sits in your freezer, so aim to defrost sooner rather than later.

•Bacon: 1 to 2 months
•Breads: 2 to 3 months
•Casseroles: 2 to 3 months
•Cooked beef and pork: 2 to 3 months
•Cooked poultry: 4 months
•Cookie dough: 3 months
•Fruit: 8 to 12 months
•Frozen dinners: 3 to 4 months
•Hot dogs: 1 to 2 months
•Lunch meats: 1 to 2 months
•Sausage: 1 to 2 months
•Soups and stews: 2 to 3 months
•Uncooked chicken (parts): 9 months
•Uncooked chicken (whole): 1 year
•Uncooked steaks, chops, or roasts: 4 to 12 months
•Uncooked ground meat: 3 to 4 months
•Vegetables: 8 to 12 months

Basic tips for freezing food:
•Freeze foods as close to purchase (or harvest if you have a garden) as possible. The fresher food is when you freeze it, the better the quality when you defrost it.
•While most foods can be frozen, there are some foods you should keep out of the freezer. Don't freeze canned foods or eggs in shells (which can crack and allow bacteria to enter). Technically you can freeze mayonnaise, cream sauce, and lettuce, but the quality takes a big hit. Here's a list of foods that don't freeze well with details on their condition after thawing.
•Cool cooked foods down before freezing so they freeze faster, which helps preserve quality.
•Packaging matters and varies depending on what you're freezing. If you choose glass over plastic containers, wrap, or bags, you'll need to make sure it's tempered so it doesn't break.
•You can freeze meat in its original packaging, but if you want to store it for long periods of time, add an additional layer of packaging, such as plastic wrap or bags.
•It's always a good idea to label items so you know what they are and how long they've been in the freezer.
•Resist the temptation to defrost foods on your countertop. The three safest ways to thaw foods are in your fridge, in cold water, and in the microwave.

~Entry Tour~

Kelly's room tour this week is of entry ways. My goal here is to create an environment of "Shalom" when you enter our home.

*My mom gave me this wooden desk. She had painted it fuschia (a very bold pink). I painted it black & added the glass amber knobs. We keep our shoes in the baskets. Very functional with a small child!

*This sign hangs above the front door...Pretty much sums it up!

There are crosses, scriptures & faith quotes as you enter.

What we did to this space:
*Hand-scraped Red Oak flooring
*New wall paint
*New trim & door paint
This is the BEFORE:

*As you can see the walls were 3 different colors, the floors were a mixture of stained carpet & dirty vinyl.

Have a blessed day!

~Savings Goal Update!~

Is anyone else in shock that it is already December 1st??? Literally, I can't believe my eyes. This year has flown by! It seems like yesterday that I was setting goals for 2010. I haven't mentioned it in a while, but I have some very exciting news....I HIT MY SAVINGS GOAL FOR 2010!!! It was not easy to do, but I stuck with my plan and accomplished it. Let me tell you that it feels good to set a goal, work toward it and then to see it through. Love it!

Reaching my savings goal, however fulfilling, was NOT the best feeling. Helping out families in need by giving money, food and supplies is what I will remember most about this year. Helping others and doing God's work is the most amazing feeling. I want to thank those of you who helped a particular family that I posted about on here. You all blessed me by blessing that family. Thank you.

In January I will start posting about setting goals for 2011. It is never too early to start thinking about it. Dream it, Believe it and Make it happen!
