~Tip for Today=Cook Ahead!~

Feeling overwhelmed with summer break ending, school beginning and a million things to get done in a week?
Well, I've been a bit overwhelmed trying to figure out how to get everything that needs to be done in the next 2 weeks accomplished. Between school, work, holidays, guests, birthdays, etc there seems to be no time to plan ahead.

In an attempt to make the next couple of weeks easier for me in the kitchen, I'm spending today cooking chicken in bulk in my crock pots. Once they are finished, I'll chop them up and freeze them individually based off how much my family eats per meal.

This is an easy way to get ahead of the game and stick to a meal plan. I'm always saying that it is so much easier to eat at home if you can make a meal in 20-30 minutes. If your meat is already cooked, you are one step away from a quick and easy dinner!

Hope this helps someone today!

Blessed~

~Tip for Today=School Supplies!~

Buy school supplies in bulk!

It is a no-brainer to buy school supplies right now when you can get them super CHEAP! There is no reason to wait until the last minute and go one place to buy them all at full price. Instead, each week look at the sales ads and drop by the participating store (or comp at Wal-mart) and pick up those items. Pick up extra for next year or to donate.

As we all know, there are some supplies that your child will need each and every year. Why not buy them when they are .01-.10 each, rather than $1?

This is really not overwhelming, I promise. No coupons are needed. Just run in and get the sale items. It really is that simple :)

Happy Monday!

~Tip for the Day=Use it up!~

Tip for the day...

Don't throw food away! One of my 2012 goals was to use food up before it goes bad. My ultimate goal was to not throw any food away this year. We have done a great job! Yes, there have been things that had to go. However, not many. We have tried to use all ingredients on hand and tweak our menu to make it work out that no veggies went bad before we finished them. That has meant a lot of veggie salads for us! Luckily, we love them and like eating lighter when it is so hot.

Challenge: Try to use up all the food in your fridge before it goes bad!

Happy Tuesday!

~Tip for Today!~

Howdy Sassy Savers!

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Is everyone surviving the heat? Whew.

As I was trying to come up with something to write about today, I thought about a tip for the day. You all seem to love those!

Tip for today:

When you are at the end of a tube of a squeezable item (toothpaste or sunscreen), simply cut off the bottom. You will find at least a weeks worth of product left. I just did this with my sunscreen and am on week #2 of using it. I was amazed at how much was actually left! Nothing would come out no matter how hard I squeezed!

Hope you found this tip helpful!

I'm back from New York! Just in time to get my JBF items ready to sell. Woohoo! Hope you all have been working on your items and telling all your friends & family about this awesome event while I was gone.

Remember, you will have a new universal consignor number this time around. Be sure to read directions on what to do with your old tags.

Several of you have questions about how JBF works. They have the following Q&A's on the website that I found to be very helpful.

Q: Where is your sale?
A: We are located at the Mesquite Rodeo Exhibit Hall. 1700 E Rodeo Dr Mesquite Texas.

Q: What type of payment do you accept?
A: We accept cash, MC, VISA and Discover

Q: Are children allowed when you are open to the public?
A: Yes, children are allowed to shop with you when we are open to the public. All children must remain with the adult that they came with at all times. No children are allowed on our presale day.

Q: How often do you have these sales?
A: Twice a year! In the Spring (usually March) for Spring/Summer clothing and in the Fall (usually August/Sept) for Fall/Winter clothing

Q: What can I use to shop with?
A: You can bring a "canton cart" or a laundry basket with a belt attached to drag along. We do allow strollers/wagons on our open to the public days. However, on the presale no strollers/wagons are allowed.

Q: How can I sell my children's things?
A: You just sign up to be a consignor on our website, tag all of your items and bring them to us on drop off day. For this Fall 2012 sale our drop off day is Tuesday, July 31st from 8am-8pm. No new consignors will be accepted after this, but we would love to have you in the Spring.

Howdy Sassy Savers!

Just wanted to check in and say that I'm alive and kickin'. We have been enjoying our summer and time visiting with family & friends. I've been attempting to not be so tied down to my computer this summer. Last year was a year of change for our family and I did not acclimate as well as I'd hoped. Too much going on and not enough down time.
So, this summer I'm trying to change that. In doing so, I have not devoted a great deal of time to this blog. Please forgive.

Speaking of devoting time this summer...we are preparing for our mission trip! We are so beyond excited about how God is going to work through us. It is going to be amazing!

On a recent trip to OK, my Dad reminded me to stop and smell the flowers. Life is short and beautiful things are sometimes temporary. It was a sweet reminder. Thanks Dad! Cherish the flowers (moments) in this season of life.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend with your families!

~A Lesson On Living~

A lesson on living...

Sometimes life throws you situations and circumstances that you do not expect. This happened to me on my 11th anniversary island trip with my hubby. We were enjoying our beautiful scenery when God placed a family into our path.

I won't go into all the details, but a brief summary is that a family was there celebrating a life of a girl whose body is full of cancer. They were there having a blast and truly soaking in every single moment as if it were the last. They were living in the moment and not letting anything stop them. There were no problems, no issues, no worries. They were just enjoying the time that the Lord has given them.

On our last day on the island, I was able to have a long conversation with the girl who has cancer. She is REMARKABLE! Not once did she complain about chemo, radiation, being sick or anything. Instead we talked about her hopes and dreams and her bucket list.

How many opportunities in life do we meet someone living out their bucket list? It was inspiring. She is choosing to LIVE and not be the victim of anything. It was wonderful and so refreshing to be in the presence of such company.

All of this to say, I challenge you to start living today! Get control of your finances and stop being the victim of any situation, especially your finances. Do your best and live life to the fullest. Live your life in a way so that you can fulfill a bucket list someday. Start making your dreams come true!

Do you have a bucket list? I challenge you to start one today (if you haven't already). It is fun to dream!

When it is all said and done, I want to have lived life and experienced things. I want memories of beautiful places and people that I've met along the way.

I will never be the same. I am forever changed.

Blessed Beyond Measure~

We have the cheapest electric bill of anyone that I've met in our neighborhood (those with the same house plan). I know that part of our savings has to do with the fact that we unplug items.

~Budget Tip-Eat a Sandwich!~

Good Morning Sassy Savers!

This week I'll be posting more simple budget tips. If you have any tips you would like to share, please leave me a comment. Enjoy!

Budget Tip:

Eat one sandwich meal per week. I know, not very exciting...Sorry...Not very exciting at all, but it will save your family money just by doing this once per week. Calculate how much a typical meal costs to make or eat out (I realize some of you don't cook) and put that money aside or apply it towards savings or paying down debt.

*Mix it up by grilling the sandwiches. It makes it feel more like a meal to me :)

Sounds simple, right? These budget tips are meant to be simple & easy solutions so that you will do them and start reaping the rewards of living within a budget.

~Budget Tip=Start Small!~

Budget tip for the day:

Start small!

If a budget completely overwhelms you, tackle it one category at a time. For the first month concentrate on 2 categories. Make your main focus staying within or under your allotted budget amount. Once you conquer those 2 categories, add 2 more the next month. Before you know it, you will be working a full budget. You can do it! I promise :)

~Budget Tip=Get a Mentor~

Have a financial Mentor!

Think of someone who has their finances in order. Think of someone who you can ask questions and who will hold you accountable. Ask that person to be your financial mentor for a season to help you reach your goals.

I did this a couple of years ago with one of my financial/spiritual mentors. It was awesome! I would report to her each month how much money I saved. That year I ended up saving several thousand dollars above my goal and I think it had to do with the fact that I was reporting to her each month. It was exciting to exceed my goals each month!

If you can't think of anyone to be your mentor, please email me.

Howdy Sassy Savers!

Sorry for the lack of postings. I'm having a hard time getting back into the groove of things. We were gone for 9 days and then had a weekend full of events. Life is good :)

Back to June being budget month! Are you excited?! I am typically most excited about my budget AFTER our tropical vacation each summer. Sounds weird, I know. We come back from what I like to call "paradise" and I can't wait to begin saving for the next vacation!

Tip for the day:

DREAM! Set a goal and work toward toward it.
Example: One of our goals for each summer is an anniversary trip. Each month I do my best to stay on budget so that I know we can go. Our rule is we DON'T go any trip unless it is paid for when we book it. It is NOT a vacation if you owe for it once you return home.

~Beauty of a Budget~

Hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend! We had a fun weekend full of events. We were exhausted when it was all said and done. We spent time at the park, pool, parties, cookouts and celebrated our anniversary. It was a great weekend!

The end of the month is near and that means that you should be looking closely at your budget. How are you doing this month? Are you over in any categories? Did you spend less in some categories?

The beauty of a budget is that it is fluid! Each month usually presents different events and items that need purchasing. Move your money and plan accordingly. Example: I get my hair done every other month (or so). The month that I'm getting it done, I budget X amount for that service. The next month, that category goes back to $0.00. I know that expense is coming up and that I need to plan on that money NOT being spent in another category that month.

I know budgets can be a pain to get started. However, life on a budget is so much better than the alternative! I promise, you can do it! Hang in there :)

Blessings~

Good Monday Sassy Savers!

Hope everyone had a great weekend! Do you ever feel unlucky when you are trying to save money or even couponing? You have a master plan and then get to the store to find that the hoarders among us have already cleared the shelves. Boy, that is annoying!

Anyway, there is hope! Yesterday we ran by Kroger after church, which typically is not my favorite time to go, and found an awesome deal on pork chops! I was on the cereal aisle, yes I remember exactly where I was! A man came over the intercom and said "while supplies last...pork chops .99 per lb!" Woohoo! Let me just say that I ran to the pork chops and waited for them to bring them out. It was very exciting! I was able to get 3 family packs of chops for less than $3.50 each!

That deal totally made my trip! It is always fun to get a great deal on something unexpected. That makes up for the times when it doesn't always go as planned.

My point here is to not beat yourself up over deals that don't work out. Instead, just know that there may be an even better deal just around the corner!

Good Morning Sassy Savers!

I had one of the best weekends with some amazing girls at a lake house. Literally, I don't ever remember taking time out for an extended amount of time. It was just what all 6 of us needed. We had so much fun!

As we were talking the one thing that kept coming up was eating out vs. cooking and eating at home. 3 of us cook and the other 3 eat out most of the time. It was fun to talk about tips and tricks to make cooking at home faster, more efficient and healthier for our families. The reason why I cook is to keep my budget where it needs to be. Eating out is the #1 budget buster (pretty sure I've mentioned that at least 100 times on this blog;)

Today is Monday and the perfect time to take a few minutes to plan out a menu for the week. I promise, it is not too difficult or time consuming. Go through your freezer, fridge and pantry and start writing down different meals you can make. It really is that simple!

I encourage you to make time to spend with friends and people who lift you up. A little time away will give you peace and grant you more patience for your family.

Howdy Sassy Savers!

How is your week going? Mine has been busy, yet again. My daughter has a Science Fair this week, plus JBF Plano and fundraising for our NY Mission Trip. All that combined will wear a sister out! Sadly, when I get super busy and tired I can't sleep. Such a bummer! Oh well, there will be time to sleep later in life (I'm told). Ha!

Aside from the craziness of life, I've been setting some hefty personal goals. I'm always inspired by other people, so I thought I would share in hopes of inspiring you today. The goal is to get rid of at least 10 items from your house per day. You can trash them, donate them or sell them. Believe it or not, this is very easy to do!

*Clean/Organize
I've found that if my house is not organized, neither is my life! Don't feel like I've ever really gotten ahold of the clutter. Seriously. This is a revolving resolution and a revolving FAILURE. Do you know how annoying it is to set the same goal every single year? Well, I'm guessing the answer to that was YES!
My point here is that I decided to break it down into to small tiny chunks each day. Can I just say this approach is working for me?!

Here is a list of things I've tackled:
*Sewing Room
This was a huge undertaking! I have too much stuff and not enough room. At least it looks better now and I can actually leave the door open.

*Office
This room never looked too bad, but the papers on the desk were a bit out of control! I had to get rid of several things and make a bookshelf more functional than fun. The results are great! I'm amazed at how happy a clean and organized work space makes us!

*Kitchen
This is always a work in progress! I've reorganized my pantry, utensil drawer and counter top space (you know that corner that collects junk mail?). This is a daily struggle to stay on top of it. Hanging in there ;)

*Master bedroom
Cleared out some stuff and tackled the closet. Whew! The master closet might just be my favorite part of this house due to the size. I color coded it and that made a HUGE difference! So much better. Honestly, I feel like I have new clothes now. I encourage everyone to do this! Clothing looks different and more appealing when it is organized.

*Guest Bedroom
Removed 2 pieces of furniture so that it didn't appear any smaller. Liking the look of a larger room now for our guests.

*Play Room
This is still not cleared out, but has made some progress. We got rid of a couple of items and that has given my daughter more room to play. It is very hard to get rid of anything as she is sentimental about EVERYTHING (like her momma).

*Garage
Spent hours organizing a section of this. I'm happy with the progress, but am a long way away from where I would like it. Baby steps.

Why have I done all of this? I'm attempting to be set free from a life of stuff! I'm so tired of meaningless stuff cluttering my life. Do you feel this way? I want to live with simplicity in my home, not chaos.

It is sort of a funny feeling that I have in the pit of my stomach. I believe God is gently preparing me for what is to come. We know that our lives will be forever changed by this mission trip. The idea of it all is just so exciting!

I'm now ending this long post.

Happy Wednesday!

~Saving Money Without Coupons!~

I get so many questions as to how I "coupon". People want to know exactly how I'm doing it since all the coupon policies changed at my favorite store. Well, the answer is that I'm not very much! I use coupons when there is a sale and something I'm buying has a coupon. I always try to use coupons for toiletry items. If there is not a coupon, I try to only buy items at their rock bottom prices.

Plus, I've been trying an Aldi experiment over the past couple of months. They have such great everyday deals! We've been trying to not eat much processed foods, so getting deals on fruits, veggies & fish is a big deal.

We went to Aldi this weekend. Listed below are a few of the deals. No coupons, just everyday low prices.

Veggie Chips-$1.69
Tilapia (bag)-$4.49
Sweet Potato Chips-$1.99
Wild Caught Salmon (bag)-$4.49
Fiber cereal-$1.29
Apples (3 lb bag)- $2.47
Mushrooms-$1.69
Granola/Oat bars (box)-$1.49
Milk-$2.09
Bananas-.42 per lb
Oranges (3 lb bag)-$1.29
Strawberries-.99
Eggs-.99
Cucumbers-.59

As you can see, those are some great prices on quality foods. Anyone can walk in there and get these prices. Sadly, there is not an Aldi close to our house. When we go, we try buy enough for 2 weeks. So far we have liked all of their brands. We were shocked at how good the chips were! Literally, the veggie chips are better than any other that we've tried. Very exciting to get them for a fraction of the price!

It is Monday, so we should talk about menu planning. I gifted a friend a menu planning pad this weekend. Of course that got me to thinking about my own failures in planning a menu last week. The previous week I did awesome and stuck to it! However, last week was full of events and it just didn't happen. Don't worry...we did eat ;)
I love having a plan. I need to have a plan. I thrive on having a plan in life. Do you feel the same way? There is a peace with a plan.

Happy Menu Planning Sassy Savers!

Monday Blessings~

~Try Natural Fixes First!~

Try all natural approaches first to save money.

My big toenail has suffered trauma twice in the past 5 years. Don't ask...it's really not an exciting story either time, just very painful! Anyway, the past couple of years I've had to keep polish on the nail year round due to how bad it looked. It was discolored, flaky, and looked like it was heading toward fungus. Gross! I didn't want to be a part of the "Fungus Among Us" group!
(Don't worry...there are no before and after pics simply because feet really gross me out and there is just no need for anyone to see my big toe nail. Trust me, it wasn't well.)

I was at the point the other day where I was willing to spend hundreds at the doctor to get something for it. Then my neighbor suggested Tea Tree Oil. Of course, you all know how much I love putting oils on my body. So, I ordered some off eBay!

Everything that I read online said this process was slow and could take up to 12 months! Geez! That is a long time to doctor something twice daily. I decided that I would give it 2 weeks and see if there was any improvement. Well, I'm not even a week into it and my nail is looking 90% better. I'll be shocked if it isn't completely back to a normal, healthy looking nail by the end of the 2 week period!

So, once again the natural remedy works wonders and saved me money! Tea Tree Oil can be used for a great deal of things and is relatively inexpensive. I'm excited to have it now and plan to use it on many things in the future!

Blessed~

~Failure Isn't Forever~

Well, it is a new month already! Happy April Sassy Savers!

How did your budget turn out for March? Mine was pretty good. Hit my savings goal! Woohoo! Feel like I'm back on track now. Sometimes getting momentum going is key to staying on track with saving money.

If you fell off the money saving train, never fear! It is a new month and you can start today! Everyone makes mistakes. The only failure is if you don't try again.
Yesterday our Pastor said something so profound about failure that I had to write it down.
"FAILURE IS AN EVENT, NOT AN INDIVIDUAL!"

Moving onto SUCCESS!!! My hunky hubs ran his first 5k and placed 3rd! You go Baby!

Happy Monday!
